Since opening in 1996 The Elaine Somers Gallery under the direction of Elaine and Susan Abraham has gained a reputation for exhibiting a wide range of contemporary Irish, European and American art. Always on the ?cutting edge? they have refrained from becoming involved in work by dead artists and have concentrated instead on mostly younger, up and coming artists.
The gallery quickly recognised the need for such unknown artists to have a show place in which to exhibit their art. Many of them like Colin Watson, Noel Murphy and Gareth Reid have gone on to greater success showing in London and New York. In 2003 the decision was made to move to new premises in the city centre trading as Elaine Somers Fine Art. In doing so they became the first gallery showing purely contemporary art in Belfast for many years.
