| 'Essence' - 4 Abstract Painters |
|
Four abstract artists' creative response to shapes, structures and visual essence of Irish landscape. Ger Sweeney lectured in Fine Arts before becoming Director at Artspace Studios. Exhibited in Ireland, Europe and in the USA, his work in The European Parliament, Guinness and the Dept. of The Taoiseach. Sean Cotter graduated with honours in fine art. The bleak and romantic sea and landscapes of Galway became a strong influence in his earlier work. He has had many exhibitions throughout Ireland and abroad. James May is self-taught. His work retains a candid quality and fascination with colour, mark making and texture. In 1991 he received the RUA Silver medal. Joesphine Kelly studied Fine Art at the University of Ulster where she graduated with a BA (Hons) in 1997. She has since exhibited widely in Ireland and also in London and Paris. Her work is included in OPW collection, The Civil Service Collection, Northern Ireland, IBEC, The Housing Executive at NI and The Carvel Group.

| Lisa Ballard - Solo |
|
Lisa Ballard opens at the Mullan Gallery on Belfast's Lisburn Road with a solo show on Saturday, the 17th of May. A previous winner of the President’s Prize at the Royal Ulster Academy, Ballard's loose guestural style has won her many admirers - including Caroline Mullan. Initial comparision with her father, Brian Ballard, has faded away as her own, individual style matured and developed over recent years.
The Mullan gallery has substantially increased its reputation recently with solo shows of irish art of stature - including solo exhibitions by Donald Teskey and William Crozier. The galleries philosophy of working in partnership with its artists has fostered a fierce loyalty from both sides and this promotion of the artist's work is certainly paying dividends for both artists and gallery. Its artists are not just the established figures in Irish art - but also some of the emerging artists who will represent the next generation of irish artists. Recommended show.

| Leo Duff - 'Standing Stones' |
|
Leo Duff usually uses paper - not canvas - for its “sensitivity”. She prefers and enjoys the feeling of how paper absorbs most pigments and how water and other pigments infiltrate and spread in through the fibres - not only a process but a dialogue between artist and materials. Duff uses white on white, black on black - or applies barely identified pencil stokes on very dark textures, and silver on grey for utilizing an easy way to express the abundant contents and meanings of different layers - some drawings look like landscapes or maps with contour lines. Duff started out her career at the old Caldwell basement gallery in Shaftesbury Square. Her opening nights were always hugely successful with a party atmosphere. Duff has moved onto bigger and greater things. She has had a celebrated career as an illustrator and now lectures at Kinston University in London. This show has been inspired by her travels through the far east, Korea and Taiwan but links back to her homeland in Ireland.

| Jim McDonald - 'Titanic' Solo Exhibition |
|
This solo exhibition by Belfast Artist Jim McDonald is a particularly special one as it will coincide with the launch of a set of Royal Mail stamps depicting McDonald's paintings of RMS Titanic and SS Nomadic. McDonald's’s images of Belfast City life remind us of a time gone by and his shipyard paintings are particularly poignant, illustrating the friendship and camaraderie that existed around the yard. The use of McDonald's paintings for the stamps is a special tribute to one of Ireland’s finest figurative painters whose work has previously been praised by Belfast City Council who used his paintings for their recent Titanic Exhibition, purchasing one for their own collection. Renowned Irish Artist, Gladys MacCabe is also an admirer of his work. In addition to McDonald's oil paintings, there will also be sketches and prints available, all celebrating his paintings of RMS Titanic. Highly recommended exhibition.

| Valerie Whitworth - Solo |
Gormleys - Omagh -
23rd May - 6th June 2008
'If you look at any square inch of the 72 paintings, the familiar Whitworth micro-world of shimmering light, energy and colour, each brushstroke is as honest and natural as a signature. Whitworth's unique exuberant style, developed over 25 years of angst and triumph, is a warm invitation to a celebration of the images here, in all their absurd diversity.’ Kevin Mc Aleer

Why Invest In Irish Art
"The Irish art market has grown faster than any other international art market worldwide. Each year sees unprecedented records smashing those of the previous year," writes David Britton in the Irish Arts Review, and he ends,"it was a very good year for Irish art." Irish artists continue to set personal records at Sotheby's, Christie's and auction houses in Ireland itself....A couple of years ago, Forbes - the key magazine for the world's top entrepreneurs - commented that "since 1990, 20th-century Irish art, Dutch Old Masters and English sporting pictures have been the art market's three fastest-rising sectors - with the Irish climbing the most steeply."
