The fine art collection at Queen's has been built up since the mid-nineteenth century through donations, bequests and purchases. The first recorded acquisition, a large copy of Titian's The Murder of St Peter Martyr, by the Belfast painter James Atkins, was presented to Queen's College (as it then was) in 1847, during the erection of the building. The collection, which continues to expand, now comprises over 200 landscapes, genre paintings and portraits Amongst the artists are represented Irish painters of the first rank, such as William Conor, James Humbert Craig, Paul Henry, Louis le Brocquy, Sir John Lavery, John Luke and Frank McKelvey.
