Crawford Municipal Art Gallery, the city art museum for Cork, is dedicated to informing a wide audience about the significant role that the visual arts play in contemporary life and culture. Located in the heart of the city, beside the Opera House, the Gallery is a critical part of Cork?s cultural and tourism infrastructure, welcoming over 200,000 visitors a year. In line with a policy of providing access to all sections of society, admission to the Gallery and to exhibitions is free.
The Gallery?s permanent collection comprises over 2000 works, ranging from eighteenth century Irish and European painting and sculpture, through to contemporary video installations. At the heart of the collection is a collection of Greek and Roman sculpture casts, brought to Cork in 1818 from the Vatican Museum in Rome. The collection is particularly strong in Irish art of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The Irish Museum of Modern Art was established by the Government of Ireland in 1990 as Ireland’s first national institution for the presentation and collection of modern and contemporary art. Since its official opening in May 1991, the Museum has rapidly established itself as a significant and dynamic presence in the Irish and international arts arena. It is widely admired by its peers throughout the world for the range and relevance of its exhibitions, for its innovative use of its growing Collection, for its award-winning education and community programme and for its visitor-centred ethos and facilities.
The Museum’s temporary exhibition programme regularly juxtaposes the work of leading, well-established figures with that of younger-generation artists to create a debate about the nature and function of art and its connection with the future. In 2003, for example, we presented exhibitions by the Spanish sculptor Cristina Iglesias, the African-American film and photographic artist

I am delighted to be able to introduce this publication which details the depth and range of the art collection currently in the possession of Meath County Council. The collection, and this catalogue, will undoubtedly be of interest not only to all of us living in Meath, but to art lovers and academics further afield.
